Why I Joined the Economic Development Committee

I joined the Economic Development Committee for one simple reason: Richmond’s future depends on how strong our local economy is.

Economic development is not abstract. It determines whether storefronts are full or vacant, whether small businesses survive, and whether the city has the revenue to fund public safety, parks, and infrastructure.

When businesses thrive, neighborhoods thrive.

Local Dollars Matter

How Local Spending Drives Richmond Economic Development

Research from the American Independent Business Alliance shows that locally owned businesses recirculate roughly 48 percent of revenue back into the local economy, compared to about 14 percent for national chains.

That means when you spend $100 at a local Richmond business, nearly half stays here through wages, local suppliers, and services. When you spend it at a chain, much of it leaves the community.

Local spending multiplies.

Stronger local businesses mean stronger city revenues. Stronger revenues support the services District 4 residents care about.

Making Richmond: A Buy-Local Initiative for Economic Development

That is why I want to launch a buy-local initiative called Making Richmond.

The idea is simple:

If we want businesses to thrive here, we need to support them here.

“Making Richmond” would highlight local businesses, promote neighborhood shopping campaigns, and build pride in keeping our dollars circulating in our own city.

Economic development is not only about attracting outside investment. It is about strengthening what we already have.

Why Richmond Economic Development Matters for District 4

District 4 residents want active commercial centers, stable property values, and strong city services.

That starts with economic stability.

I joined the Economic Development Committee because I believe Richmond should grow strategically, support its entrepreneurs, and compete effectively in the Bay Area economy.

When we invest in Richmond, Richmond invests back in us.

If you believe in building a stronger local economy from the ground up, I invite you to stay engaged and be part of this campaign.
