From Jamin Pursell, candidate for Richmond City Council, District 4
I unequivocally condemn antisemitism in all its forms, including the spread of antisemitic conspiracy theories that put Jewish communities at risk.
Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez’s actions following the horrendous murder of Jews celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney is very troubling. In the immediate aftermath of that violence, the mayor shared unfounded conspiracy theories that echo long-standing antisemitic tropes and claims that have historically been used to justify hatred and violence against the Jewish people.
Words matter, especially when they come from the highest elected official in our city. By amplifying misinformation rooted in antisemitic narratives, the mayor caused real harm within our Jewish community at a moment of grief and vulnerability.
I have consistently spoken about the importance of inclusivity and respect. Richmond is stronger because of our diversity in all its forms including, but not limited to, religious, cultural, racial, and lived experience. That strength is undermined when leaders use their platform irresponsibly or fail to understand the harm their rhetoric causes.
The mayor’s shallow apology focused on posting “too quickly,” rather than on the substance and danger of what he shared. That failure to take responsibility is unacceptable. This is not the first time he’s shown a lack of judgment, integrity, and fitness to lead. It is about a culmination of all rhetoric used and the lack of nuance and compassion to share these statements, especially during Hanukkah.
I support the formal censure of the mayor. If he does not understand why spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories is dangerous or refuses to take full responsibility for the harm caused, then he should admit he is unfit to serve as mayor.
Richmond deserves leadership that brings people together, leads with integrity, and protects every community from harm. Anything less erodes trust and weakens our city and community.
